Android & iOS Apps for Small Businesses - What to Expect

“We need an app like Instagram, but for our business.”

I hear that a lot. Then I ask: who uses it every day, and what does it do better than a website or WhatsApp?

Android & iOS Apps for Small Businesses - What to Expect

A mobile app can be a great investment - or an expensive sculpture nobody opens. Here’s how I look at it with small-business owners.

When a mobile app makes sense

An app makes sense when there’s repeat usage:

Examples: field work-order apps, loyalty, booking, internal warehouse apps.

When you don’t need an app (yet)

If you need:

…start with a strong mobile website. Cheaper, faster, easier to share.

Another option: a PWA - a web app that can be installed on the phone. A good bridge between website and native app.

Android, iOS, or both?

For small businesses we often start like this:

  1. One priority flow (e.g. Android + admin panel)
  2. Or a cross-platform approach when both stores matter
  3. Native when performance / hardware integrations are critical

App Store and Google Play have rules, review, icons, privacy policy, listings. That’s not “extra” - it’s part of the work.

A mobile app in everyday use

What’s included in real development

What’s often missing from a “cheap app” quote: maintenance, store fees, marketing, policy changes, post-launch iterations.

How long does it take?

Rough orientation:

Depends on screens, roles, offline logic, and integrations.

How not to waste money

  1. Define one core job for the app.
  2. Ask: would 20 users really open this weekly?
  3. Start with MVP, not “everything competitors have.”
  4. Plan maintenance from day one.
